Shirley Chia
Researcher and editor at HealthCostHub. Covers healthcare pricing, insurance plan math, HSA / FSA / CareCredit financing, dental cost, healthsharing plans, and federal patient-billing protections.
Role
Shirley is responsible for research, writing, and editorial review of every article and calculator on HealthCostHub. She is not a licensed clinician, not an attorney, and not a financial advisor. Content scope is intentionally limited to cost, process, and consumer-rights information — we do not give medical, legal, or financial advice.
Methodology
Each article follows a consistent research process:
- Primary sources first. Federal regulations (CMS, IRS, HHS, DOL), state insurance department publications, and brand-published terms.
- Verified pricing data. CMS hospital price-transparency files, published cash-pay prices, and lender-disclosed APRs. Where numbers vary widely, we explain why (state, market, plan, credit tier).
- Plain-English translation. Insurance and billing jargon broken down so a reader can verify everything against the underlying source themselves.
- Last-updated dates. Every article shows when it was last reviewed; we revisit on a quarterly cycle or sooner when a major rule changes (e.g., annual HSA limits, NSA rulemaking, state law passage).
Scope
HealthCostHub covers:
- Procedure cost guides (MRI, CT, colonoscopy, ER visits, childbirth, knee replacement, etc. — cash prices, insurer allowed amounts, regional ranges).
- Dental cost and financing (single implants, All-on-4, crowns, root canals, dental discount plans, dental tourism).
- Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and the related tax-treatment rules.
- Medical financing options (CareCredit, Cherry, Walnut, Sunbit, personal loans).
- Healthsharing plans (Medi-Share, Sedera, Liberty HealthShare, Christian Healthcare Ministries).
- Federal No Surprises Act protections and state-by-state ground-ambulance balance-billing laws.
- Insurance plan math (deductibles, coinsurance, OOP max, in-network vs out-of-network).
